For as long as humans have existed, our love for beauty and color has never stopped. Imagine having lived in ancient times when the discovery that plants could create rich, lasting colors. Must’ve have felt like pure magic!
Through either serendipity or necessity, people found that natural pigments from plants could be used to dye fabrics – and these colors, unlike anything else, would stand the test of time. With this discovery, they began to create their understanding of life, their awe of nature and their creative wisdom into the practice of plant dyeing.
In our journey, we’ll find a variety of dyeing plants, including the famous banlangen (Isatis root). Here, you’ll witness the fascinating transformation of banlangen into vivid indigo dye. It’s a moment to appreciate the centuries-old wisdom of local farmers, who have learned how to turn plants into dyes and those dyes into the vibrant fabrics that fill our lives with color and beauty.
By using nature’s palette, plant dyeing became more than just a craft – it became a way to preserve eternal colors in the flow of time. Each piece of fabric, dyed by hand, carries with it the spirit of nature and the wisdom of humanity, creating something truly timeless.
Let’s let the colors of the Earth bloom onto the cloths!
